The Compagnon de Ruffieu Family were all well respected and contributed to the Catholic Church and to their Society.
THE NOBILITY TITLE WAS EARNED NOT BOUGHT.

This is the translated copy of the preface written by my Father, Pierre de Ruffieu

This work, despite its appearance of simplicity, was a long and laborious undertaking.
Thanks to the interest of those distinguished and learned readers, this work will not have been written in futility.

It was a thankless task, because what could be more difficult then presenting a long series of documents about nobility in a pleasant form.
But the author knew how to resuscitate the memories of the past and the Castle de Ruffieu, as well as the illustrious families who lived there.

The goal of this work was to gather some notes on these families, who belonged to the Castle.
To communicate to them and to show them that despite the ruin of Castle, as well as the inevitable distancing of certain members’ vis-à-vis the others, there always remains a common bond.
It is this noble and simple pride that one must have, to belong to a race that is always appreciative of its country with its noble virtues of justice, loyalty and kindness.

The intention of the author was thus not to publish this work, but on the insistence of several parents and friends he decided to do so, thinking of it being useful for the readers

And since the small brooks make the large rivers, if this work does not have a great value from the point of its intended view, it is certain that it will serve de authors to have the courage to some day create works on a grander scale.

This castle, one of most admirable located in the Province, protect its surroundings with its ditches/moats, drawbridge, entrance court, court, and terraces.
Enclosed by the walls were, the main floor area, the upper floor area, and lower floor known as castle under the rock.
On the main floor were cisterns, refrigerators, furnaces, cellars, pantries, stables, and kitchen, chapel and carriage house.

In the cellar were cold cellars and pigeon coops; then some steps down , there was a farmyard in which the housing for the gardener was located with a storeroom which contained the tanks, presses, a stable for cows.
There were two gardens which required a considerable amount of maintenance because of the impetuosity of the winds.
The Lords of Ruffieu had the right of imposing justice in Prolieu and Posafol, with the right to install officers for the exercise of controlling misdeeds and to impose and execute sentences.
In the X111 century existed a church at Ruffieu mentioned in the original “Chart De Portes” of 1267, and in a bulletin of the Pope Gregoire X of 1267.
This castle was demolished as a stronghold at the expenses of its owner, who was held prisoner in the prisons of Ambronay since 21-November –the second year of the “Indivisible and democratic French Republic”, until the 8 February of the year three, while François de Ruffieu, his son, was prisoner of war after having fought for his country

Mr. de la Fontaine contributed much towards the Chateau Page. See his Coat of Arms on the Intent Page next to Father's. I wish him and his family many wonderful years. With gratitude always, Celine
